Istared at the ceiling above my bed, my eyes evaluating every detail of a particular notch in one of the wood planks. Whatever Lennox had given me earlier that evening was doing nothing to ease the frustration pulsing through my body as I tried to fall asleep, however it had made dinner much more bearable. I supposed its effects had long since worn off. That didn’t explain why Aerie’s tea wasn’t working tonight, though. My skin was sticky with sweat from the countless hours I’d spent tossing and turning.

So many of the previous nights I’d spent just like this. Sleep had become a stranger, something I chased and chased until it turned on me abruptly and took me over like some blood-starved animal. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was chasing sleep or avoiding it. The constant tapping of Kahlis’ threatening hold on my mind was enough of a warning call to know what dangers were near, just within reach if he decided tonight was time.

The house had gone quiet several hours ago. I was positive everyone was asleep by now—except Vander. I rolled my eyes at the sound of his paws thudding against the hallway as he paced. He’d taken to the habit of lingering outside my bedroom door at night. I supposed he was checking on me, making sure I wasn’t locked away in my mind, deep within Kahlis’ grasp.

If only he knew how close Kahlis was. A rhythmic tap tap tap sounded, as if in answer to my thought. The sentiment of Vander’s efforts would have been sweet if he'd bothered to say more than three words to me at any given moment. Why did he care so much about what would happen to me if he wasn’t even going to take the time to acknowledge me?

That wasn’t true, though. He acknowledged me just fine. That was part of the problem. I couldn’t seem to get away from those guarded, glowing eyes and the set look of resentment on his face. He was constantly there, watching, judging my every move.

I shook out a shiver as his cold gaze lingered in my mind.

Unable to quell my discomfort, I lost patience with the bed and decided to try my luck at pacing. Perhaps a couple laps around the room would tire me enough that I could finally find sleep.

On my third lap past the window, I paused. Something in the depths of the night had caught my eye. I watched the almost-black trees in the distance, waiting for whatever it was to show itself. Everything was still, though. Not even the wind was moving. I lingered a moment longer, telling myself that I was officially losing my mind. I turned my head back to the path I’d begun wearing into the floorboards just as something moved beyond the trees. I spun, gripping the windowsill as I caught sight of it again.

It was just a small flash, a little bob of light amidst the dark forest beyond. It was gone as fast as it had come, but it had definitely been there.
